Day to Day:
"You Know What the Sky is?": This week we knocked at one house and starting talking to this guy. He asked us, "Do you know what the sky is?" We were both a little confused. His answer was that the sky is Jesus´ eyeball looking at all of us. It was the first time I have heard that.
Tiptoe Through The Tulips: So this week, the other two elders that live with us have been scaring us like every night when we get home. But, the first night stands out the most. We weren't expecting anything to happen. While we were walking home, one of them called me and asked where we were. They said they were a little farther away and wanted us to go to the store before it closed (it was already closed). When we got home, the key was in a different place than usual which was odd. I leaned into the house and flipped the light switch but nothing happened, which was also odd. So I walked into another room to try to turn on the light. Nothing happened. I sat there for a few seconds messing with the light switch when, suddenly, on the other side of the room music started playing. The song was "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" by Tiny Tim. If you haven't heard that goofy song, go look it up. SO, I booked it out of the house and I told my companion, "THAT WAS NOT ME. THAT WAS NOT ME." He was like, "Oh whatever man!" And I was like, "NO SERIOUSLY" and I started leaving. When he saw that I was serious he started leaving too. Then we heard a loud bang on the door behind us, and then we heard the other guys start laughing. This all started because a week or two ago, my companion and I found a random giant picture of some random kid and hung it up at our house and tried to convince the other guys we had no idea where it came from.
Spiritual Experiences:
"Be Still, My Soul": On Sunday, a member from my ward and I performed a special musical number during Sacrament Meeting. I played "Be Still, My Soul" on my horn and she played piano with me. I´m so so grateful for the many musical opportunities the Lord is blessing me with. It helps me to remember that there are many ways we can bless the lives of others.
I Love To See The Temple: This week, my mission had the opportunity to go to the Campinas Temple. I can testify of the power that comes through the temple. For any of you who haven't gone through the temple yet, please work on going through as soon as you can. For any of you who have already gone through, please make it a priority to go regularly. You will see many blessings if you do so. The temple brings so much peace into our lives.
Joseph Smith: Last night at a family home evening meeting, we watched "The Restoration." I love the story of how Joseph Smith restored the Gospel of Jesus Christ on the earth. I would love to tell the story of how it all started. In 1820, a young boy named Joseph Smith (being at that time 14 years of age) had a question. "Which of these many churches is true?" One day, while he was reading in the Bible, he found an answer, or better yet, he learned how he could receive an answer. He read in the book of James chapter 1 verse 5 which reads, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him." Joseph said that never did any scripture touch the heart of a person more than that verse did to his. If anyone lacked wisdom, it was him. So, he went to a grove behind his house. He went there alone so he could kneel down and pray and ask of God. When he began praying, he said he began to be attacked by some very real, and very dark force. It attacked him so hard that he was unable to speak. He said, "But, exerting all my powers to call upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into despair and abandon myself to destruction-not to an imaginary ruin, but to the power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being-just at this moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. It no sooner appeared that I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw to Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other-This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!"
I testify to you all that at that moment, Joseph, a 14 year old boy, saw God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus answered his prayer and his questions, and over a period of time, and with help from more heavenly visits, he restored Christ´s church on the earth today! What a marvelous time we live in! We are blessed with the promises of eternal life! We are blessed with the guidance of the Holy Ghost! We are blessed with the help of a Heavenly Father, and we are blessed with the Atonement of our Brother Jesus Christ! I exhort you all to follow Him. I know sometimes it can be difficult, but I promise you, you will see miracles if you "choose the harder right, instead of the easy wrong."
Love,
Elder Tolen
